Green Toys Review & GIVEAWAY - ends 3/9/12

When my daughter was about 11 months old, I decided she was ready for a toy that would develop and "fine tune" her stacking, sorting skills. I started to look at the local stores near my home, but there honestly wasn't much to choose from, so I began looking online.

I will begin by saying that we are a family that does our best to live by the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” motto. Not that we regularly recycle our rainwater to water the plants, or have solar panels installed on our roof (although those are things we will work towards) we try to do our part in caring for the earth.

Green Toys is an amazing toy company that I have found makes all their products out of 100% recycled plastic in the USA.  These days, it seems like there are so many toy companies out there, churning out their wares in foreign factories with who knows what materials, and no real oversight on keeping up standards for reducing environmental impact. You can imagine, it was quite refreshing to find a company like Green Toys with such awareness and stewardship in the toy industry.

Green Toys was generous enough to "share the love" not just for the planet, but for McKinney Mommas as well, by sending us their Green Toys Stacking Cups to review with my daughter earlier this month.

I love the bright yet uniquely mellow colors of these stacking cups.  They are numbered 1-6, so you can help your little one learn math and counting while developing fine motor skills at the same time.

These Stacking Cups by Green Toys are so versatile - and can be stacked, nested, filled and poured.  They're also great for outdoor play, indoor play or even bath time (we've tried it all).

Now, I like to think that my little one is smart but we're still working on perfecting the stacking skills, mostly she just likes to knock them all down once her mommy (me) builds a tower with them.

Oh, well, we'll keep trying!

I feel really good about purchasing toys for my kiddo from Green Toys for these reasons:

  • No BPA, PVC, phthalates or external coatings
  • Made in the USA
  • Made out of 100% recycled plastic
  • Using recycled plastics, Green Toys saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Adventures in Baby Formula

I am a bargain hunter, have always been and probably always will be. I guess my momma taught me to be thrifty since an early age, being that she had 4 children under the age of 5 and all of us living in a 500 square foot house for the majority of our developmental years.

Last year, after having my first child, I planned to breastfeed her for as long as possible but ended up needing to supplement my supply with formula after about the 6th month. My budget was not prepared to handle the additional cost of formula, so I had to get “creative” in looking for deals on baby formula.

I tried pretty much all of the major brands, requesting samples and hunting for coupons online and off. I was happy to find out that my daughter pretty much let me change brands as any new deal came up, which was great. I never needed to try soy formula though, since her tummy allowed for regular blends.  Since I was leery of cheaper brands, I started off with the major brands, but after trying a sample of Parent's Choice Baby Formula from Walmart, realized that they were pretty comparable with the major brands and my daughter would drink these formulas just as well as the popular major brands.

I found that an average family could save roughly $600 per year by switching to a baby formula like the store brand from Walmart.  Luckily, my daughter is just about done with formula at a year old now, but I was happy to find that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg for baby formula. As long as your infant is tolerant of different brands, I'd say venture out and take a look at some of the lesser known brands before spending your whole budget on the “popular” formulas.

Just be sure to do your homework and check the labels and ingredients to make sure any new baby formula you try has all your doctor's and FDA recommended vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

Birthday in a Box Review

We recently celebrated my daughter's 1st birthday!  Her birthday is only two days after mine, and we're both Aquarians, but I wanted to make sure her birthday was especially HERS and independent of mine.

Since she's my first child, and this was my first experience planning a birthday party for a child, I decided to call in the party experts.
Birthday in a Box,  is an online party supply company that boxes up and ships amazing birthday party kits. I was excited to find that they are SO much more than just an online party supply store. They have fun party planning guides based on 100 different themes, complete with activity guides and suggestions for crafts, party favors and more.

To take the guess work out of party planning, there are many standard "birthday boxes" to choose from that are created for 8 guests, typically including:
  • Cake plates
  • Cups
  • Napkins
  • Table Cover
  • Plastic cutlery
  • Two colors of streamers
  • and Candles
OR....you can create your own, a la carte!  Which is what I did!

Once on the Birthday in a Box website, I shopped by Theme, under 1st birthdays, and found a cute (and classy might I add) ladybug theme for my daughter's FIRST birthday.

My little peanut's Birthday in a Box!

Items we chose (a la carte):
  • (8) Ladybug Party Cake Plates - $3.79
  • (16) Ladybug 1st Birthday Napkins - $4.69
  • (24pk) Red Cutlery Set - $1.99
  • (8) Ladybug Party Hats - $4.29
  • Ladybug 1st Birthday Candle - $4.49
  • Ladybug 1st Birthday Highchair Kit - $5.59
  • Ladybug Party Centerpiece - $4.59
  • Ladybug Party Personalized Banner - $15.99
I was really impressed with the prices, especially since I didn't have to drive anywhere to shop and the items were delivered right to my door!

After choosing which items to order, I spent some time looking over their First Birthday Party Ideas page which had some fantastic suggestions on how to make personalized invitations, how to select a location, fun party food and decorating ideas, even activities and party favor advice.

Here's some photos of how my little peanut's (or should I say "my little ladybug's") party turned out, thanks to Birthday in a Box

Shopping at Birthday in a Box, was a completely hassle-free and positive experience from start to finish. For once, I didn't feel like the company was trying to get me to spend my entire life savings on my child's party.  They actually offered altruistic advice and suggestions that they did not directly profit from (such as the party favors and party food suggestions).

Thank you to Birthday in a Box,
for an amazing "first" 1st Birthday Party experience!

Now, be sure to go check them out before planning your next party!

CandiCheeks Review & GIVEAWAY - ends 2/29/12

When my daughter was a newborn, I went on a mission to find some cute hats for her since she didn't have much hair and it was a cold winter. For some reason, it was SO difficult for me to find cute hats and socks for her.

I shopped both online and in the major children's stores, but the majority of selections were boring ol' yellow duckys, blue dogs or pink kittens. I wanted something unique and different for my one-of-a-kind daughter to wear.

I've done a lot of searching online since then, and now and again will run into a few children's accessory boutiques that I like to bookmark for future shopping.

Doesn't it always seem like when you aren't looking for something anymore, you find it?!

CandiCheeks is a new and fresh, children's boutique online, owned by John & Sue Lee, a husband and wife team out of Chantilly, VA. Their shop was born out of a similar need, as I mentioned above, to find their first child a selection of unique and cute accessories that couldn't be found in the local children's clothing stores.

ABOUT CandiCheeks

Why are cute baby/children styles overseas not widely sold in the U.S.? After looking through all of the different samples produced by international manufacturers, John & Sue decided to take the plunge in creating an online webstore, CandiCheeks, created by Parents for Parents, wanting the cutest and adorable baby accessories, nearly impossible to find! Soon after determining the product line, CandiCheeks was launched in Spring 2011, and the marketplace that was once a dream, became a reality (from Candi Cheeks site).

Khaki Outdoor Safari Hat

Sandy Sandal Socks

 Pinky Bunny Ears Crochet Hat

I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity to review a few items from CandiCheeks and share my opinions with you all!

I chose to review the Rainbow Blue Elephant Slip-On Socks and Happy Prince Polka Dot Bunny Hat

Rainbow Blue Elephant Slip-On Socks

These cute rainbow elephant socks, ($4.99 - size 1-3yrs) have such a unique and cute pattern!  The colors are brilliant and the grippy bottom soles worked great for my 12 month old, she didn't slip once while wearing these.  There is a cute little elastic lacy top that holds the socks in place so they don't slouch down.  My daughter LOVES wearing these socks with shoes or without!

Now, this is a hat you can't find in the regular children's clothing stores.  It comes in pink, coral, aqua and brown, so you can match it to many outfits and is only $9.99!  I think this would be a perfect hat for Easter since it has a cute little bunny.  My daughter actually loves playing with this hat in addition to wearing it because of the little bunny decoration.

You can find all these cute hats, socks and MORE by shopping at their website:
