Premama Beverage Bash and Mommy Party Playgroup

I'm not pregnant anymore, but since I'm breastfeeding, it's important to still take a prenatal vitamin.  During my last pregnancy I found, Premama Prenatal Vitamin Drink Mix and have been using it ever since.

Check out my first Premama review, here.

Premama and MomSelect, offered to sponsor a "Premama Beverage Bash" so I could invite other moms in my playgroup to try the vitamin mix and see what they thought.

I often attend or host a weekly playgroup anyway, so I figured I'd combine the two and make it a "Premama Mommy Party Playgroup."

Question:
What party, with pregnant and nursing mommas attending is complete without some tasty grub?

Answer:
None.

So, I decided to try my hand at making mini quiches for the first time.  I went out and bought a little mini cupcake baking tray and grabbed a recipe from MomSelect and MommyParties, called "Mom's Mini Quiches."

Mom's Mini Quiches -my new go-to party recipe!

For a minute, while mixing up the dough for the crust, I got really nervous and thought it wasn't going to work out, and I'm more of a cook than baker, so thought I had gotten myself into a pickle.

Miraculously, with just a dusting of flour on my fingertips, I was able to tell that dough who the boss was and in a snap I was done.  The recipe was really quite easy, and I think I might have eaten more of these little fellas than the pregnant mommas - needless to say it was a hit.

Mom's Mini Quiches

Ingredients:
  • 1 1/4 cups biscuit mix (or (1) 6oz. pkg (I used Pioneer brand)
  • 1/4 c. butter, softened
  • 2 Tbsp boiling water
  • 1/2 c. half & half
  • 1 egg
  • 2 medium green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground red pepper
  • 1/2 c. shredded swiss cheese (I used an italian blend)
  • 1/4 c. red bell pepper, chopped finely
Instructions:
  1. Heat oven to 375F.  Generously grease 24 mini muffin cups w/ cooking spray.
  2. In a small bowl, stir biscuit mix and butter until blended.  Add boiling water; stir vigorously until soft dough forms. Press rounded teaspoonfull of dough on bottom and up sides of each muffin cup (here's where I needed a dusting of flour on the fingers)
  3. In a small bowl, beat half & half and egg until well blended.  Stir in onions, salt and red pepper.  Spoon 1 & 1/2 tsp egg mixture into each muffin cup.  Sprinkle cheese over tops.
  4. Bake about 20 minutes until edges are golden brown and centers are set. Cover; refrigerate any remaining appetizers.

Party punch & Premama

Back to the party.  I made a sweet juice punch, with orange juice, apple-cranberry frozen concentrate, and ginger ale for us to mix the Premama Prenatal Vitamin Drink into.  The prenatal vitamin is made to be mixed into your favorite beverage, so you could do lemonade, iced tea or just about whatever liquid your little heart desires.

Hummus & Veggies

I also served a little veggie plate with hummus dip, to make sure these mommas get their daily quota of veggies into their diet.

My next mission is to make my own hummus.  I've heard it's quite simple!

Kiddos playing with puzzles & learning to take turns

We let the kiddos play, and shared some pregnancy stories with each other.

A pregnant momma guest & daughter snacking

All of the mommas agreed to try Premama Prenatal Vitamin Drink Mix for the first time.  One of the moms, isn't a fan of ginger, and mentioned she could detect a light ginger taste.  Another pregnant momma, finished her punch with Premama mixed in, and said she didn't notice a flavor at all!

Overall, the consensus was that Premama was a great alternative to taking those big nasty prenatal "horse pills."

Premama comes in convenient individually wrapped packets

Now, let's exercise our "pregnancy brains" with some Pregnant & Nursing Momma Trivia

...no cheating!

Questions:
1. True or False? Women should not begin taking a prenatal vitamin until she has conceived.

2. Which of the following helps provide energy?
a. folic acid b. ginger root c. biotin d. B vitamins

3. True or false? Vitamin D3 supports bone health for the mom only

4. Which of the following helps prevent birth defects of the brain and spinal cord?
a. calcium b. Iron c. folic acid d. DHA

5. Which of the following fish contains the highest level of mercury and should be avoided during pregnancy?
a. tilapia b. salmon c. catfish d. swordfish

6. True or False? Women need around 600 extra calories per day during pregnancy

7. Where do women typically gain the most weight during pregnancy?
a. blood b. breasts c. retained water d. fat and protein

8. Which vitamin may help protect against preeclampsia during pregnancy
a. coenzyme Q10 b biotin c. choline d. magnesium

Answer Key:
 1. False - Prenatal Vitamins are most effective when taking during conception, pregnancy & breastfeeding
2. d. B Vitamins
3. False - Vitamin D3 supports bone health for both momma and baby
4. c. Folic Acid
5. d. Swordfish
6. False - Each pregnancy is different, but most women typicaly need about 300 extra calories per day
7. d. Fat and Protein
8. Coenzyme Q10

How many did you get correct?

I got 7/8, right. Not too shabby, if I don't say so myself!

At the end of the party, all of the mommas who attended, were happy to receive a 30-day supply of Premama to take home with them.

Thank you to Premama and MomSelect for sponsoring such a fun Premama Mommy Party Playgroup - our own bodies and babies are healthier for it!

iPhone Apps For Your Disney Princess Lovin' Little Girl

Does your toddler love playing games on your iPhone?

Or, were you one of those smart mommas, who prohibited it from the get go.

I didn't. Oh, well.

I'm a pushover, I guess.  My toddler might actually use my iPhone more than I do.

Anyway, we had a chance to review a few Disney Princess apps, recently and I thought I'd share them with you.

Princess Dress-Up: My Sticker Book

Description from iTunes: "Readers help their favorite Disney Princesses prepare for magical moments in this dress-up sticker book. Updated version includes interactive camera feature, plus new outfits, shoes, stories, and Princess Tiana."

Well, what little girl wouldn't like to magically insert their face onto their favorite Disney Princess and play Dress-Up?

"Big Sister H" is only 24 months, but she is totally digging this app. You can help your peanut take a photo of themselves, which they can replace the Disney Princess face with.  Then You can change their shoes, dresses, add crowns and jewelry and more.

When she's found the perfect outfit and accessories, you can snap a photo to save and email to friends and of course, Grandma and Grandpa! How cute is that?

Cinderella: Storybook Deluxe

Description from iTunes: "Disney’s Cinderella has enchanted generations with its spellbinding story, charming music, and endearing characters that live in your heart forever. This app includes a full retelling of the film with fresh illustrations, engaging narration, music and sound effects, as well as whimsical interactivity on every page."

My little one, kinda flipped through the pages pretty quickly on this one, she loves books, but so far doesn't have the patience for storytelling apps. at 24 months.

However, she was a quick study in the puzzle feature of this app. there are about 6 puzzles, with varying levels of difficulty, all of scenes from Cinderella the movie (shown below).

After she mastered level one, she's begun her hand at level two. Always up for a challenge my daughter, is. She has to ask for help often on level two, but is slowly figuring out where all the pieces go.

There's also a screen where the fairy godmother sings "Bibbity Bobbity Boo", and it has the words and little bouncy ball to sing along. Now, I've never figured out ALL the words to that song, "la macha la boo la roo.....blah blah" so I'm having fun trying to sing along with her.

Hey, you just never know where mommy/daughter bonding is going to come from, right?

Red Gold Saves Game Day - Fresh Black Bean Corn Salsa & GIVEAWAY

Game Day was upon us and with two kids underfoot, I needed a quick and easy recipe for appetizers.

Red Gold, a family owned company since 1942, whose mission is to "produce the freshest, best-tasting tomato products in the world” had just sent me some of their products to try out, so I figured I'd give them a whirl.

Getting all my ingredients in order.....

Taking a look in my pantry and fridge, I found some black beans, canned corn, green chiles, cilantro, green onion and Red Gold Diced Tomatoes - Chili Ready with Onions.

I'm thinking, some kind of black bean and corn salsa?  Easy as pie...or salsa (ahem).

I found a recipe on the back of the 100% Natural, Red Gold Diced Tomatoes for a similar sort of salsa / dip.  For the life of me, I can't find the recipe online and I threw away (wait, let me toot my own horn...recycled) the can so I don't have the exact recipe - but will try to give you the basics.

Red Gold Fresh Black Bean Corn Salsa

Ingredients:
  • 1 can (14.5oz) Red Gold Diced Tomatoes - Chili Ready w/ Onions
  • 1 can corn (drained)
  • 1 can (15oz) black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can green chiles (4.5oz)
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 c. cilantro, chopped
  • salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
  • MIX IT UP!

No, but seriously, it was that easy. Taste it after mixing all the ingredients together because I can't remember if I added a Tbsp. of red wine vinegar. I think I might have. Oops.

If any of you can find the recipe on the back of the can, send it my way so I can put up accurate ingredients.

Once you taste it, you just can't stop eating it!

I had a friend visiting from out of town when I made this dip / salsa and she snacked on the leftovers for days.  I even made my daughter a quesadilla with the bean salsa inside the next day and she loved it!

There's nothing I love better than a quick and easy recipe, that packs a punch of flavor and keeps you coming back for more!

10 Minutes Alone with Cafe Escapes

Me time?  What's that?!  It's not often that I get any "me" time these days with a toddler and infant rolling around my feet constantly.

Trips to the coffee shops are practically non-existent. So, it was exciting to find Cafe Escapes Coffee drinks available in K-cups, that remind me of the drinks I used to order from the barista.

I think Chai Latte is my favorite out of the samples I've tried so far.  I fell in love with Chai when I was in college in San Diego, and used to order them while sitting on the patio at a little coffee shop by the ocean.

Brewing the Cafe Escapes, Chai Latte brings me back to that mellow time, when I had a little bit more "me" time.

Even if it's only during the 10 minutes that both the bambinos are napping, and I'm sipping my Cafe Escapes.....

it's nice to escape once in awhile, isn't it?

Disclosure: I am a Bzzagent and received samples of this product for review. However, all opinions are my own and I am not required to write a positive review if it's not warranted.

Cedar Fever in Texas - Tips to Help Deal With Allergy Face

Have you been feeling extra sneezy, have itchy eyes or congestion, and live in Texas?

It might be due to the fact that Cedar Fever season is striking a little late this year.  Many of the symptoms end displaying themselves, as "allergy face" - red nose, puffy face, you know the drill.

To help you stand up to these troublesome symptoms of Cedar Fever, Zyrtec has joined up with beauty expert Rebekah George to help us Texans overcome Cedar Fever and combat Allergy Face – find some helpful tips below:

Photo by: David Castillo Dominici/ freedigitalphotos.net

Tips to Help Combat Allergy Face

To tackle a puffy face:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. You may also want to create “beauty water” by filling a pitcher of water with cucumber, grapefruit or lemon slices for a little extra flavor!
  • At night, use an extra pillow or two and try sleeping with your head elevated. Elevation can help drain fluids from your face so skin and eyes are less puffy in the morning.

To hide a red nose:

  • Apply a thick layer of cream at night. Then, smear on a lighter-weight oil in the morning.  Allow oil to dry for a few minutes and apply a yellow-based concealer. Finish with a swipe or two of a bronzer in coppery tones to cancel out the redness.
  • Consider using fragrance-free, lotion-treated tissues, which are gentler on your skin and can prevent areas from becoming more red and sore.

To brighten eyes:

  • On days when your eyes feel too irritated, skip eye shadow and use a bright blue waterproof mascara. The colors help to brighten and counteract dullness!
  • You can also stash two spoons in the fridge.  Take them out and place them on your eyes whenever your eyes are feeling puffy.  The metal from the spoons holds in coldness longer, so you get better results than using cucumber slices.

Do YOU have any helpful tips for coping with allergy symptoms?

*Disclosure: I was not compensated in any way for this post. Just trying to be helpful ;-)

"Get Your Bump On" at Medical City Children's Hospital

Where you want to have your baby is something you either think about as soon as you find out you're pregnant, or maybe already had  in mind, you just needed a positive pregnancy test to get things started. Either way, it's a big decision to make and I have to be honest with you, the hospitals in Dallas make it really hard to decide.

I delivered at a hospital just outside of Dallas and I loved my experience. Thinking all hospitals were the same, I changed my doctor and delivered my second child at a different hospital. I loved my birth but I didn't really enjoy my short stay after. That just showed me that, in fact, all hospitals are not the same.

That's why, when I was asked to attend an event at Medical City Children's hospital, to learn more about their labor and delivery, I jumped at the chance. I love childbirth and I'm amazed at the options available for women. Every hospital really is different and Medical City Children's is definitely among the elite in DFW! I couldn't wait to check it out.

The evening included samples from the amazing celebration meal that is offered to all new moms and one guest during their stay at the hospital.

I'm always interested in the food at hospitals because I feel like what they are offering is only getting better and better. Medical City definitely does not disappoint!

The Celebration Meal includes the option of Roquefort Pear Salad or Portabella Spinach Salad for starters.

The guests can choose from Pesto Salmon Salad, Crab Tetrazzini with Shrimp, Truffle Seared Airline Chicken Breast, or New York Strip Steak with Fingerling Potatoes. Yum, right?!?!

Let's not forget dessert! New moms have the choice between Pineapple Coconut Torte or Chocolate Bombe.

Wow! I'm already sold!

If that wasn't enough, we were given a tour of the NICU and Labor and Delivery.

I never needed the NICU for my babies, but for those who do, it should be a comfort to know that Medical City has one of the only Level 4 NICUs in Dallas. If you were to deliver at a hospital without this type of NICU but your baby needed to be in a Level 4 NICU, you would remain in your hospital to recover while your baby is transferred. I can't even imagine having to let my baby go to another hospital while I stayed to recover.

My favorite parts of the NICU were all of the amenities to make parents more comfortable. I saw a breastpump next to each baby's bedside and even a room used specifically for pumping. In addition, there was a room that can be used for moms to spend the night. They want those parents to be as comfortable as possible while they are there, and that was obvious.

One of the nurses who guided our tour of Labor and Delivery was in her third trimester of pregnancy and told us how much she was looking forward to delivering her own baby there. That, in itself, says a lot.

Should you be looking for a hospital to deliver your next baby, or maybe even the baby you're carrying now, Medical City Children's Hospital is top notch and a place I'd be proud to be at to bring my own baby in to the world.

A special "thank you" to guest blogger, Jamie Roubinek, author at Roubinek Reality for attending "Get Your Bump On" hosted by Medical City Children's Hospital and writing this article for McKinney Mommas.

Comforts for Baby Gift Set by Kroger {Review & Giveaway}

I will be the first to admit, I typically think generic brands don't work as well as name brands.

So, I was curious when Comforts for Baby, a Kroger store brand recently sent me a Comforts for Baby Gift Set to review.

The items were packaged nicely inside a sturdy black diaper bag with the cute Comforts for Baby symbol on the front. Non offensive and in a neutral green color. I love the size of the diaper bag, about the size of a large handbag or daybag - not the size of a huge duffel bag, which is good in my book.

Inside a the diaper bag, I found a 31 pack of diapers, some cotton swabs, baby oil and powder, baby wipes and a set of sippy cups.

Right away I started using the diapers in place of my name brand diapers.  31 Diapers later, and not one leak.  Well, not for me anyway, my hubby says he thinks he remembers one.

I liked that the diapers weren't bulky, very streamlined and trim.

I think my favorite item in the whole package was their disposable cups.

It's too often, that we forget a sippy cup at a playgroup or out at a restaurant.  The disposable sippy cups are great for packing when we travel to a relative's home or to stash in the car in case one gets lost.

Note, these aren't spill-proof cups - just good ol' BPA free plastic cups with a sippy top. I've actually washed mine and keep using them, no need to throw away if they still work, right?

So, at the end of the day, this store brand seems to be standing up to a challenge. Kroger's Comforts for Baby is A-okay in my book.

Thanks for teaching me a lesson Kroger.

  • Macromolecules and ions create antibacterial action in the laundry water
  • No overpowering fragrance = good for the environment

The only con I noticed would be that the ball is designed to work with regular sized loads (not small loads).  However, if you're like me....since kids you probably don't even remember what a "small" load of laundry looks like, which makes this a non-issue for most of us.

The second product Oransi sent me was the Oransi Ionic Fridge Air Purifier. This product was designed to remove bacteria and odors from the air in your refrigerator, with a patented Piezo-electric technology.

For some reason, I've always figured ionic products were just a sales gimick.  I mean if you can't see what the product is doing, how do you know it's really working, right? I was wrong.

I installed the (2) AA batteries in this little device and set it in my fridge. I think I forgot about it, and it migrated to the back of my fridge.  I remember opening the fridge door that next weekend, and thinking "did my hubby clean the fridge?", because I wasn't greeted with an "old food" odor.

This little gizmo does a powerful job, because last week I had cauliflower, a drawer full of cheese and kimchi in the fridge.....and those are some pretty pesky scents!

I'm sold.
