I sold my car when I decided to stay at home with my kids, and shared one small car with my husband for the past 2 years. It wasn't easy.
After finding out that Baby #3 was on the way, there was no physical way to fit three car seats into our Honda Civic, so we did some creative work with our budget, enlisted the help of the grandparents, and leased a van.
I've been so used to not paying for gas the last two years, that my first trip to the gas pump was not a happy one. Fortunately, I've figured out a way to save a little change at my next trip to the gas station.
Tom Thumb, a grocery store that I frequently shop at here in Texas, has just introduced Gas Reward Points at participating Exxon/Mobil gas stations and Tom Thumb Gas Stations.
This means that every time I shop at Tom Thumb and use my Reward Card, I earn points towards money off at the gas pump at Tom Thumb and Mobile/Exxon Gas Stations.
Each dollar I spend grocery shopping, means 1 point earned towards gas rewards - and when my balance totals 100 points, I can redeem them!
So, for after I spent $100 on groceries, I was able to head to the Tom Thumb Gas Station - in the same parking lot - where I redeemed my gas reward points for 10 cents off each gallon!
Now, if I keep earning points, and rack up 200 points, I could get 20 cents off each gallon, and 1000 points would earn me $1 OFF each gallon in a single fill up!
By using my Tom Thumb Rewards Card, which I use for shopping anyway, instead of paying $2.86 a gallon, I paid $2.76 a gallon, for a total of $41.40 for 15 gallons instead of $42.90.
Hey, each dollar counts in my family budget!
Plus, if I keep shopping at Tom Thumb, save my points and earn the maximum amount of points (1000), for $1 OFF each gallon that would have made my gas purchase:
$27.90 instead of $42.90
Now, THAT is a huge savings!

I love Tom Thumb - but we aren't close to a gas station of theirs. Glad they partnered with Exxon/Mobil - now I might be able to use some of my points! (Liz N)

I shop at Tom Thumb and I do use points for gas.
ReplyDeleteI shop at Safeway. I get the gas rewards but they aren't worth it to use in this area because we have an alternate gas station that is still less-expensive even without the points, but I'm sure the gas rewards saves some people money, which is great!
